Alex Alice is a French graphic novel writer and artist, working in France and sometimes in the U.S. Born in 1974, he grew up in the south of France and had the chance to travel around Europe, where he developed a life-long passion for the ruins and castles of the medieval and romantic ages. This infused his art, from the grim medieval setting of esoteric thriller The Third Testament (1997-2003, co-written with Xavier Dorison) to the primeval, mythic world of Siegfried (2007-2011), an operatic re-telling of the northern saga of the great dragon-slayer. His interest range from cinema and animation to painting and illustration (he received two Spectrum Fantastic Art awards for his covers), and extend to fine art and sculpture. He exhibited Siegfried-related pieces with French sculptor Christophe Charbonnel in 2015. His Siegfried has also been produced as a video performance set to Wagner's music performed by the Orchestre National de Lyon.
His new ongoing series is his most personal work to date. In Castle in the Stars, he draws on Jules Verne and nineteenth century romanticism to create a watercolor world of adventure and wonder, to enchant adults and younger readers alike. A special exhibition on this series was produced in 2017 by the Angoulême International Comics festival, showcasing 70 pieces of original art along with costumes, props and models. This was followed by two one-man shows at the Galerie Maghen in Paris (2018 and 2020). His works have been translated in 19 languages.
