Born in 1949 in Chile, Luis Sepúlveda is a renowned writer. Ex-footballer and activist for many political and ecological causes, he made the choice of writing. Throughout his work, we find themes such as the repression of dictatorships, the harms of pollution and values such as tolerance. After asserting his support for President Allende in the 1960s, he was imprisoned for more than two years under Pinochet’s dictatorship. Since then, Luis Sepúlveda has been involved in various struggles within global organizations (Greenpeace, International Federation for Human Rights, UNESCO programme, etc.) and journalistic institutions (The diplomatic world – chilean edition). Through these works, he expresses this need for freedom.
His first novel, The Old Man Who Read Love Novels, was a huge success that placed him among the international writers (with more than one million copies sold worldwide). In 1996, he told The Story of A Seagull and The Cat Who Taught Her To Flyin youth literature, which promotes values of tolerance and criticizes mass pollution. The award-winning book was adapted into an animated film a few years later.
Luis Sepúlveda died in April 2020 from Covid-19.
