Kiki's Delivery Service - The story

Kiki's Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便, Majo no takkyūbin, literally "The Witch's Quick Delivery Service") is the fifth Japanese animated film, from director Hayao Miyazaki. Produced by Studio Ghibli in 1989, it is an adaptation of a children's book of the same name by Eiko Kadono, published in 1985.

Kiki, the main character, is a young witch who leaves home at the age of thirteen to live on her own in a different, European-looking town. There she sets up a fast air delivery service; and since her only real magical power is her ability to fly, she meets many people who help her integrate and learn to be independent. Although Kiki is a witch, the film focuses on the vicissitudes of everyday life of a young teenager who must come to terms with her own abilities in order to find her place in a new community, all themes dear to the director's heart.

The film was a huge success, attracting over two million viewers when it was released in Japan. Combined with sales of merchandise derived from the film My Neighbour Totoro, released a year earlier, this success helped to perpetuate the young Studio Ghibli.
