Léon Bongrain: A Closer Look at an Enigmatic Artist

Today, let's take a closer look at on one of our latest releases: Léon Bongrain, dit Le Mécano. We published this book in collaboration with Les Arts dessinés and the Loeve & Co gallery. ✨

Léon Bongrain is a naïve painter. He is said to have sold paintings to renowned figures, such as the famous Rothschild family, which attests to a certain degree of success. Yet his name likely means nothing to you… That is normal: for over a century, his work has remained completely invisible.

It was not until 2023, at a flea market, that a box of drawings—containing, among other things, forty-six watercolors by the artist—was discovered, before being purchased by Loeve & Co. Stéphane Corréard (co-director of the gallery) decided to turn it into a book: a monograph dedicated to Léon Bongrain, bringing together all of the rediscovered works. 📖

Presented here for the first time, Bongrain’s art reveals a world of singular intensity—a “modern primitive painting” imbued with idealism, inner visions, and a disconcerting mysticism. In addition to reproducing all of the discovered works, this book also offers a comprehensive introduction to the artist and his work. 🎨
