About the book Solstices

With SolsticesMiles Hyman brings together for the first time his entire body of paintings — some 150 works — to offer us a comprehensive journey through his pictorial universe. Internationally renowned for his comic books, book covers, and highly cinematic illustrations, the artist reveals here the most personal dimension of his work.

As much a painter as a storyteller, Hyman explores in his paintings the light, the shadows, the silences, and those suspended moments that characterize his graphic sensibility. Each canvas evokes a story, a scene left unseen, a mystery. His mastery of composition, inherited from his work in comics and illustration, lends these images a rare narrative power.

Solstices stands out as a major art book: a total immersion in the imagination of an artist whose brushstrokes illuminate every composition. Connoisseurs will recognize his elegant, subdued aesthetic; others will discover a painter of unique sensibility, straddling the line between realism, dreamlike imagery, and cinema.

An essential volume for enthusiasts of contemporary art and visual storytelling, and for anyone wishing to explore the work of an author-illustrator who has become an international figure.

About the artist Miles Hyman

An illustrator, painter, and comic book artist, Miles Hyman trained in fine arts, first in the United States and then in France, developing a distinctive style — one that blends realistic precision, cinematic atmospheres, and a keen sense of visual storytelling. Renowned for his book covers, illustrations for international publications, and literary adaptations (Luis Sepúlveda, Shirley Jackson, Jim Thomson…) — notably The Black Dahlia (from James Ellroy) — he simultaneously pursues a distinguished career as a painter, where light, silence, and dramatic tension create an instantly recognizable world. Based between Paris and the United States, he is today considered one of the most distinctive graphic voices of his generation

They are talking about it...

"I couldn't pass up this magnificent album [...]. First, there are the warm, saturated colors that heighten the alluring effect; but there are also a few cool colors that brighten the whole thing up, with every possible shade of blue and green. [...] Miles Hyman’s talent also lies in his use of textures. The skin is velvety, shaded in a very realistic way. [...] It is a book to open and reopen, to dream and marvel at."
"There is something in Miles Hyman’s works that moves me and in which I recognize myself—a timeless, yet familiar atmosphere. We are immersed in paintings with flamboyant colors that make the twilight glow, where characters move with elegance through sumptuous settings. I was already captivated, but my heart skipped a beat when, turning a page, I found myself back home in Saint-Briac—the place where I grew up and where I later spent all my family vacations. [...] How can I describe it other than: sublime!"
