Born in 1932, Sergio Toppi began his career by working in animated movies then drew regularly for the Italian children press. In the 70’s he is a major figure of the transalpine comic book. People first notice him in France with his participation to l’Histoire de France en BD, then to the Un Homme une Aventure series. From 1997, Mosquito Editions present an overview of his amazing work by publishing first le Dossier Kokombo, and then Ile Pacifique.
Some of his comic book pages were selected for the exhibition of “The Masters of the European comic book” at the Bibliothèque Nationale then for the Musée de la bande dessinée d’Angoulême.
Toppi died of cancer on August 21rst 2012.
Mosquito Editions are still publishing his work today. After being published in seven European countries, Toppi will soon be published in Japan.
In 2012, a few months before he passed away, Sergio Toppi made about twenty color illustrations inspired by the poem La Perla written by Roberto Mussapi, a contemporary Italian author. This book was published for a special exhibition on Toppi’s work which took place in Florence (spring 2018). The poem La Perla is in Italian.
Scènes de la Bible by the famous italian artist Sergio Toppi.
Amazing artbook by Toppi which presents his incredible illustrations about Native Americans, the Wild West and its heroes. A lot of previously unseen drawings are available for the first time in this book.
Reprint of Toppi’s illustration book published in 2002 for the 70 years old of the Master.
Bestiaire by Toppi
The famous artist Sergio Toppi passed away in august 2012. The Mosquito Editions wanted to publish a tribute to this amazing illustrator: you will find in this book a multitude of his sketches and drawings as well as texts written by the poet Jean-Louis Roux.
Printed on high quality paper, back canvas, only 1500 copies. Some pictures of the Toppi exhibition in Thiers which gathered more than 350 original illustrations of the artist, including Tarot des Origines.
Beautiful illustrated book filled with paintings and sketches, with one common theme: witches and demons! You will also find ironical texts by Sergio Toppi: witches are definitely not the ugly and old women we imagine, but they are actually lovely and cheeky young ladies (often hald naked!).
The Milanese artist never stopped – for our greatest pleasure – creating series of colourful illustrations about themes that were important to him. This book highlights his relentless research as well as the evolution of his style and techniques, with illustrations accompanied by short texts written by Toppi himself.
