About the film The Boy and the Heron
After his mother dies in a fire, Mahito, an 11-year-old boy, must leave Tokyo to go live in the countryside, in the village where she grew up. He moves in with his father to an old mansion situated on a vast estate, where he encounters a gray heron. Little by little, the heron becomes his guide; through his discoveries and questions, it helps him understand the world around him and unravel the mysteries of life.
The Boy and the Heron is an animated film by Studio Ghibli, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released on July 14, 2023, in Japan. It draws its inspiration, as well as its original Japanese title, from the novel How Do You Live? by Genzaburō Yoshino, published in 1937. The film was a hit with audiences and critics alike. It won several awards, including the Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2024.
