Dave McKean, born in 1963, is a multifaceted British artist who is an illustrator, photographer, visual artist, comic book artist, filmmaker, and musician. He has illustrated novels by Ray Bradbury and Stephen King, among others. He began his career in comics with Neil Gaiman, publishing the graphic novel Violent Cases (in 1987). This marked the beginning of a long collaboration with the writer and screenwriter, for whom he drew Black Orchid, Signal to Noise (Eisner Award for Best Album in 1993) and the legendary covers for Sandman. Later, he drew Arkham Asylum based on a script by Grant Morrison, which shook up the conventions of American comics. McKean also illustrated music albums by Alice Cooper, Tori Amos, Machine Head, Michael Nyman, and Testament.
