The brothers’ fascination with Orlando Furioso began while adapting Cervantes’ masterpiece, Don Quixote, for animation.
Don Quixote often makes reference to heroes from Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem, and attempts to mimic their prowess while on his road to glory. In one memorable episode, a priest, in an effort to stop the dreamer’s eccentricities, burns all books in his library with chivalrous themes. However, he makes an exception of those very few that he considers too iconic to be destroyed. Among these is Orlando Furioso.
As impressed by Orlando Furioso as Don Quixote was, the Brizzi brothers decided to draw their own vision of these literary heroic character's deeds, exploits, and loves.
The Brizzi twins, Paul and Gaêtan were born in December 1951 and have worked all their life as artists, illustrators and movie directors. They worked under Paul Grimault, one of the directors of The King and the Mockingbird, during their formative years as artists.
They have won several prizes for their work, including the Prix de Rome in 1976 and the French Cesar Award in 1977 for their short animated movie Fracture, which you can find here on youtube.
Paul is currently living in the United States, whereas Gaëtan is still in France. Working perfectly together, even from afar, the Brizzi brothers still continue to draw and illustrate their favorite stories.
You can find their animated work online on their Youtube channel.
