About Lézards rêveurs
Lézards rêveurs is an art book that brings together two previously unpublished personal notebooks by Jean Giraud Mœbius, that he filled out between 1996 and 1999. Put together, they form a collection of texts and drawings created with the intention of tracking the elements of his graphic musings, losing nothing of what lies behind the apparent reality of the world... For Jean Giraud, walking around with a notebook in his pocket at all times had become a working method. He threw in the seeds of his future albums—such as the first pages of Le Chasseur Déprime—as well as spontaneous concepts, poems, and observational drawings. Sometimes, the pages were filled with intimate family moments, friendly encounters, or long breaks filled with solitary visions, gleaned from specific places: Paris, Montrouge, Los Angeles, Boston, Mexico City, or New York... With Lézards rêveurs, these psychic snapshots transport us directly to another place, opening up a more intimate access to Mœbius's experiences and his dreamlike wanderings.
About the title
“Lézards rêveurs” is a play on words related to the arts. In French, “les arts” (the arts) is pronounced the same as the animal called “lézard” (lizard). On the one hand, “Lézards rêveurs” (Dreaming Lizards) evokes the image of reptiles sitting quietly, letting their thoughts wander, their musings roam... On the other hand, “Les arts rêveurs” (The Dreaming Arts) refers to the different types of art and all the ideas they can inspire.
About Jean Giraud "Moebius"
Jean Giraud, alias Moebius or Gir, is a legendary comic book author and illustrator. After studying applied arts in Paris, he became the assistant to Joseph Gillain, known as Jijé. Under the pseudonym Mœbius, he went on to create various projects focused on humor, fantasy, and science fiction. His drawings caught the attention of major film directors, with whom he collaborated on several films: Ridley Scott's Alien (costumes), René Laloux's Les Maîtres du temps (storyboard), Steven Lisberger's Tron (costumes), James Cameron's Abyss (underwater creatures) and Luc Besson's The Fifth Element.
In 1997, Jean Giraud founded his own publishing house with his wife Isabelle, Mœbius Production-Stardom. Together, they published Inside Mœbius, La Faune de Mars and Le Major , among others. In 2017, their two children, Raphael and Nausicaä Giraud, joined the company. Nausicaä was in charge of the layout for Lézards rêveurs.
