About the book Silent Symphony

Silent Symphony is a thoroughly researched monograph on Franklin Booth, one of the most iconic artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. The result of a long-term project by John Fleskes and Alice A. Carter, this 300-page book reproduces more than 400 of the artist’s works in unparalleled quality and traces his career through to his death in 1948. It also includes a comprehensive biography and numerous anecdotes drawn from interviews with his family, students, friends, and colleagues.

The pen-and-ink drawings span Franklin Booth’s fifty-year career, from his early beginnings to his final works. Among these are his illustrated stories for the leading magazines of the era, as well as a selection of poems, advertisements, and prints. Color book illustrations, pen-and-ink drawings, and rare sketches for uncompleted projects are also featured in this rich art book. All pieces were scanned and photographed from the originals using state-of-the-art technology and have been meticulously prepared for the project.

About the artist Franklin Booth

Franklin Booth is an American artist known for his detailed pen-and-ink illustrations. His meticulous and unique technique has been recognized by artists and art students for nearly a century. He used his life, his beliefs, and his experiences as a vehicle to convey his ideas to the viewer, which makes his work—imbued with his respect for nature and art—fascinating. He always followed his own path and developed a style that was uncommon for his time. This has allowed his work to become timeless and to continue to captivate audiences today.
